Getting Started

WELCOME! Would you like to talk to someone who will really listen? Tell me how you are feeling or what things you would like to change, and let’s see what we can do.

Counselling will help you to make sense of things, find ways to feel better and improve your experience of life. Whether it’s at home, at work, in your relationships, in living with yourself – or all of these, we’ll begin by looking at how you are now, and then think about the past and the future. I will listen to you and work with you to identify what’s going on in your world, how you are feeling, what difficulties you may be facing, and how those things arise. Through this process, you’ll become clearer about what you would like to change and how you can achieve those changes. The counselling relationship will provide you with an opportunity to explore the relationship you have with yourself. Your experiences of the world, and of other people, are filtered and interpreted as feelings and thoughts, which are also shaped by your history and personality, in association with your human biology and culture. I will help you to become aware of how these processes operate, how they affect your behaviour, the quality of your life and how you can intervene to improve them, to create new possibilities or help to heal wounds, whether old or new, and then work towards a better future. FACE-TO-FACE OR ONLINE?

I offer counselling online by video, by phone, text or email, no matter what your location is. Face-to-face sessions are available in Plymouth. If you would like to find out more, please email me for details.

INTRODUCTORY CHAT

When you make contact with me I will reply to arrange a convenient time for an initial chat, usually a phone call. This lasts around 30 to 45 minutes and is free of charge. You will need to be in a place where you feel reasonably comfortable, and which is confidential. The  introductory chat will give you the chance to talk about what you are seeking help for and what you hope to achieve. I can then asses whether or not I can help you and I will tell you what approaches to counselling I use. The chat will also help us to get a sense of whether we want to work together, if counselling with me will suit you, and whether or not you are ready to start. You do not have to commit to this immediately – you can take your time after the initial chat before making up your mind to book.

COST PER SESSION

Each regular one-hour online session costs £50.00. Face-to-face sessions are £75 per hour. Payment is by BACS or PayPal in advance of each session.

WORKING ONLINE

Working online (or by phone) is not quite the same as face-to-face counselling, although, in my experience, it is equally effective. It suits those who feel comfortable using smartphones, computers or tablets. It is especially useful for those who can’t travel easily, or who need to fit counselling into a busy schedule. As well as the lower costs, working online can offer the advantages of being in your own home or office and being able to use speech and text together. You can also choose whether or not you wish to have your camera on or off at any time. Having a comfy, quiet and confidential space where you will not be disturbed during your session is just as important in working online as it is in face-to-face counselling.

I normally use WhatsApp for my online work. It is secure, confidential, very simple to use and works well for video or voice only counselling. If you do not have this app or prefer not to use it, there are several other options – just email me and we can discuss your needs.  When you book a session, I will send you a welcome email with some guidance notes. I will call you using WhatsApp, or by your preferred means, at the time we have agreed for our first session.
